Okay. I've been driven to this, I simply have to talk about it. One thing I live by is that if something is not working, you must change it. So, I'm sorry to all you gun-loving Americans who think that the government or thugs are out to get you and that you need lethal weapons to protect yourself. The sad fact of the matter is that even though guns AREN'T the problem they are most definitely PART of the problem. This much is obvious. It's getting to the point where your argument of "we need guns to protect ourselves" isn't quite making sense because they are doing more harm to society than good. I understand that most of the population that own guns uses them the way they are supposed to and keep them locked up in a safe for hunting or on the top shelf of a closet in case of emergencies, but I'm sorry to say it people, but there are OTHER ways to hunt and in the case of an emergency chances are the other person has a gun, too, which could have been avoided with gun control. I'm also not so naive to think that strict gun control would mean everyone would turn in their guns and it would turn into a happy-go-lucky world, that would be impossible. But, this is a serious issue and more people need to start getting serious about it and try to come up with solutions rather than clinging to their guns for whatever delusion is going on in their head. I'm not comfortable with you carrying a gun around for your protection, because you protecting yourself doesn't make me safe, it actually puts me in danger. Police even accidentally harm others in crossfires and they are trained. Seeing some schmo at a diner with a gun in his holster doesn't make me feel safe, even if he isn't waving it around. It doesn't make me feel like my rights are protected, either.
And in the case of this whole Morgan Freeman thing, I think the guy is talented and awesome and all, I just don't agree with what he said. I have a lot to say about the media, but I honestly don't believe they talk about the shooters so much so that someone else can one-up it. People want to know what kind of a person would do such a thing. They want to understand why a person could go into an elementary school and start shooting. I know I do. The best way to start understanding that is to start understanding the person who did it. Perhaps if we knew what to look for in people who would kill other people, maybe the whole gun control thing wouldn't be necessary, but since nobody is willing to change anything, nothing will be changed. I do agree that mental health is another important indicator to look into, but I think mental health is less of an issue than guns. Why are people with mental health issues getting guns anyway? We need gun control, clearly.
All in all, I realize that you think your right to own or carry weapons is important, but I think my right and everyone else's right to life is more important. I'm sorry, but you've been trumped. We've tried to reason with you, we've tried your way out for a while and it isn't working, (like many other things that were made law or written over 200 years ago), and something needs to change.
