Lyrics:
I've been disappointed for the last time
My hard word tossed aside, but I still have my pride
Is doing what's best really such a crime?
There's much work still left undone
So many battles yet to be won
So few are strong, too many are weak
But change only comes from the brave minority
It's not too late for us, or for me...
just you watch...and you'll see
We've been let down for 14 years
By failing leaders and degenerate peers
God put me here to repair destiny
I'll rise up here first and rid democracy
Then I'll rule the world...
Just you watch and see!
I have scar tissue and anxieties to prove
I fought for our Blood, our Land, and Virtue
Branded a failure and painted a fool
But I will be peaceful...as much as I am cruel!
You say we are great, no illness to cure
But if things stayed the same, we'd never endure
Our culture is lost, we're no longer pure
But I will restore us, when I become Führer!
Bio:
The context is the German Federal Election of 1932. The perspective is from, you guessed it, Adolf Hitler who lost the election to the sitting Reich President Paul von Hindenburg; despite gaining an impressively large portion of votes, Hitler did not have a majority. So...where to begin? How about the title...
The title "BeFührer" is multi-purpose. First, it's kind of a play on words that's meant to be shorter than "Before he was Führer." The second purpose is that I intended on the lyric to be somewhat of a speech that Hitler wrote for himself. Being Führer was his goal, thus entitling his speech "Be Führer" would make his objective clear...for himself.
That brings us to the speech portion of the song. I wanted the song to somewhat resemble a Hitler speech. Full of hope and pride, but also fear and doom. Not to mention a couple of dramatic, loud parts.
Other things mentioned/alluded to:
1. His failure at becoming an artist
2. His involvement in WWI and the lasting impact on him (anxieties [I debated adding this as he would never admit this to the German public, but since it was just for himself, I thought it'd be safe]).
3. His time in jail for treason.
I've also found, in the few songs I've written, that I like topics that are precursors to an event or events that we know the ending to, but are not yet known to the character.
Also, a reminder of what happens when politicians appeal to our fears and not to our needs. Atrocities can still happen.
I think the rest is pretty straight forward. Make sure you listen all the awesome songs in the album inspired by the same challenge!
