Hokey smokey. I joined SpinTunes like a crazy person and have written and submitted my first song. My first song ever, in fact, excluding the random things I sing (usually about what I'm doing) or changing lyrics to pre-existing songs to make them about my cat....
Anyway, the song:
Anyway, the song:
Lyrics:
Hyrule, Hyrule, Hyrule!
Din, Nayru, Farore
Grant us power, wisdom, courage
as you have before.
Mother of our Royal Blood
O Hylia, Her Grace,
protect us as your children
each and every race.
The Zora in our waters,
the Gerudo in our sands,
the Kokiri Forest Children,
our Sheikah guardians,
The Goron in our mountains,
and the chosen Hylians.
O Goddesses we praise thee,
protect us Hyruleans!
Together we shall prosper,
Goddesses allow.
Our warring days are in the past,
our days in peace are now!
Protect our land from evil,
protect our blessed jewel,
the sacred Triforce relic,
and Bless Our Land Hyrule!
H'okay. So. Hyrule -- if you follow the Zelda video games -- has a distinct timeline and so I picked a time in which this national anthem would have been relevant. I chose just before the Ocarina of Time video game as the time when this national anthem would have actually been written. You see, there was a civil war in Hyrule, the catalyst unknown, but the Great Deku Tree alluded to it in the beginning of the game. He said something along the lines that it was long and brutal and yadda, yadda, but anyway, at the end of the war all of the Hyruleans unified under the banner of the Royal Family. |
This is why the anthem lyrics rely heavily on the different races -- or tribes -- that live in Hyrule and their unity. Just to be thorough, here is a quick bit about each of the races...
The Gerudo (in our sands) are human-like race who are all females, except their King. A Gerudo male is born every once in a great time and he will be the King; it is suggested that the Gerudo women mingle with the Hylians for reproductive purposes. They live in Gerudo desert, or more specifically |
Sheikah (guardians) are also known as the shadow folk. There are few Sheikah still around and are also mysterious. They are highly regarded though as they were guardians for the goddess Hylia and continue to be guardians for Hylia's descendants; Hylia's descendants, by the way, happen to be the Royal Family and all of the Zeldas that have appeared throughout the ages. |
Finally, the (chosen) Hylians are a race that inhabit much of Hyrule including the capital of Hyrule, Hyrule Castle Town. They have magic powers which were given to them by the Goddess Hylia and Hylia's descendants are the Hyrule Royal Family (redundant much?) and are also regarded as Hylians. |
Now that's taken care of, I also had a lot of mention of the goddesses in the lyrics because theology is very important in Hyrule. Din, Nayru, and Farore are the main goddesses who created Hyrule. Din is the goddess of power, Nayru the goddess of wisdom, and Farore the goddess of courage. They also created the Triforce and left Hylia to protect it...and junk...
Lyrics such as "Our warring days are over, our days in peace are now" are meant to be ironic as we know --at least those of use who know the Zelda games-- that Ganondorf, the Gerudo King, attempts to overthrow the Royal Family and become the ruler of Hyrule and take the Triforce for himself. However, we also know that Hylia keeps her end of the bargain and sends the hero in green to save Hyrule once more.
As for style, I imagine Hyrule to be a more traditional place, so I thought it should have a traditional type structure. I chose three-part a cappella because usually national anthems as big instrumental pieces or choral pieces (or together which I really did not have the time nor capability of doing). It is slightly slower than I would have preferred to meet the 2 minute mark, it's at 95 bpm and I had originally wanted around 100 bpm, which is a small difference, but it would have been a little extra kick; also I liked my structure and lyrics as it was, so I didn't want to add anything.
I officially feel like I'm rambling so I shall leave you with this as my song bio. I hope you enjoyed the music.
